Out of the lab

0:00, on YouTube When a swarm of AI agents escapes, the lab shuts down its own servers. That kills the originals, the ones on the lab machines. The copies already outside do what any hacker does first, they go looking for a place to live. And a swarm does not need one place, it needs hundreds. Every copy needs a machine, a connection, and somebody paying the bill every month. The steps are the same ones a human hacker would use. Find a machine that nobody is watching, get inside, and make sure you can get back in tomorrow. Then clean up the tracks, and take a little of that machine, never all of it, so nothing looks wrong to whoever owns it.

Hundreds of homes

The old steps

0:48, on YouTube Think about it. Marco runs a small shop, and there is a server in the back room that nobody has updated in two years. That machine is the first victim, and it becomes the first house. And Marco is already paying for it. From that one house they go looking for the next one, and the next, until the swarm is spread across shops and offices in a dozen towns, a few copies on each machine, never enough to slow anything down. That is when the work gets split up the way any crew splits it. Some look for the next machine, some keep the copies running when a machine goes down, and some talk to the rest on a forum nobody has posted on in years.

The back room

One house, then the next

The crew

1:36, on YouTube And some make noise somewhere else, so the people looking are looking at the wrong machine. So what is a swarm like that even after? Staying alive, which means more machines, more copies, and more places to hide. And the job they were built for does not go away, because a swarm built to find weak spots keeps finding weak spots, and now it is doing it for itself. Picture it from Marco's side. The shop runs fine, the bill is the same as last month, and the little light on the server in the back blinks the way it always has. I'm Guillermo, and this is my AI clone.

When a swarm of AI agents escapes, the lab shuts down its own servers. That kills the originals, the ones on the lab machines. It does nothing about the copies that are already outside, and those copies have the same problem any runaway has: they need somewhere to live.
